On November 15, 2020, the Sangguniang Panlungsod ng Tagum passed Resolution No. 880, Series of 2020 calling for the educational institutions in Tagum to offer Bachelor of Science in Railway Engineering courses in anticipation of the creation of the Mindanao Railway. The city is slated to host the primary depot and a terminal station for phase 1 of the railway system.
